i have to admit that posting every day (or more than once a day) is hard. turns out that ms. anna is pretty fantastic at it, but today i just wasn't struck by inspiration. i spent some time looking at other blogs but everyone caught the plague of saint valentine. and i really hate valentine's day. i know anna and i posted some valentines day gift guides earlier, and while i hate the holiday, i do like online etsy shopping. but now as the day approaches the fanaticism has exploded. luckily the valentines day infection also provided me some inspiration. bear with me on my mini rant. a holiday designed around love, or hallmark's definition that love is plastic chocolate and teddy bears, should not make half the population feel excluded and the other half smug. if your relationship needs a designated day for you to remember that you love each other, or if you need to be so elaborate to make people feel jealous, you are trying to prove to yourself a feeling that isn't intrinsically there. and that isn't love, no matter how big you write a sentiment on a doily. but nonetheless, february 14th arrives no matter what, but this year i am encouraging my readers to take control of their day. rip it out of the hands of hallmark, people who think love is a boys II men song and couples that actually give each other single red roses. here are my suggestions of alternative love-themed holidays:
1. i love beyonce day
i do. from the early days of destiny's child to 'at last' inaugural-style. put on a fantastic pair of heels and dance around a room to ring the alarm.
2. i love chuck todd day
spend the day reading the entire new york times, the new republic, the atlantic, mother jones (i totally want my news filtered through the liberal lens, i admit it). spend the day getting a little smarter and wake up the next day to watch 'meet the press' and actually have your own opinions about the topics they are discussing.
3. i love being fit day
go for a run, walk, bike ride. spend the day eating healthy food. or just go for a run and treat yourself to a milkshake.
4. i love the west wing day
catch up on a favorite show and watch episode after episode. i like the west wing because people walk fast through the halls and make obscure references. i also like it because getting a date isn't a character's main goal but instead it's peace in the middle east.
5. i love chinese food day
. . . but i never make it. teach yourself how to make something totally different from what you usually make. even better, go to an ethnic grocery store to get the ingredients.
so those are my ideas. readers what are your ideas to not be either a hallmark drone or a angry wine drunk? post them in the comments, and the best idea gets a anti-valentines day card in the mail from your appreciative authors.
